Probably no historian before him had so systematically explored the impact of environmental engineering and services on the design of buildings (Howard, 1902 Banham, 1969). Much later, in 1969, Reyner Banham pioneered the idea that technology, human needs and environmental concerns should be considered an integral part of architecture. This paper will first look at the timeline of important publications that have been published on sustainable design and have emerged from different schools of thought, to exemplify how gradually the notion of Green Urbanism evolved. It promotes the development of socially and environmentally sustainable city districts. Green Urbanism is a conceptual model for zero-emission and zero-waste urban design, which arose in the 1990s, promoting compact energy-efficient urban development, seeking to transform and re-engineer existing city districts and regenerate the post-industrial city centre. Characteristics include narrow streets, wide sidewalks and higher densities, qualities which we can all find in the European cities. Anyone that works to create, restore, or protect a great place can join in the New Urbanism movement.New Urbanism is an urban design movement, which arose in the USA in the early 1980s, promoting walkable, mixed-use neighbourhoods and transit-oriented development, seeking to end suburban sprawl and promote community. The walkable, vibrant, beautiful places that New Urbanists build work better for businesses, local governments, and their residents. New Urbanism is about creating sustainable, human-scaled places where people can live healthy and happy lives. Streets that rely only on engineering tend to move automobiles and little else all disciplines related to the built environment must work together to create great places. A building that is connected to a transit stop will help the region function better, and well-organized region benefits the buildings within it. New Urbanism is holistic.ДЄll scales, from the metropolitan region to the single building, are related. Combining appropriate design elements makes places that are greater than the sum of their parts. The organization of buildings in a neighbourhood will help establish its character. The size and shape of a plaza will help determine whether it is consistently alive with people or windswept and vacant. New Urbanism is focused on design, which is critical to the function of communities. New Urbanists work with and include production builders, small developers, traffic engineers, appraisers and financial institutions, public officials, citizens and others with influence over the built environment to come up with implementable solutions. Great design is not useful if it canвЂ™t be built. We believe in providing squares, walkways, cafes, and porches to host daily interaction and public life. New Urbanist streets are designed for people-rather than just cars-and accommodate multimodal transportation including walking, bicycling, and driving. New Urbanists make placemaking andВ publicВ space aВ high priority. Villages, towns, and cities consist of neighbourhoods designed around a five-minute walk from centre to edge. New Urbanists want to see those human-scale neighbourhoods return.
